I am writing from SMU's Moody Coliseum, the site of a Texas county convention. You might have heard about the Texas Democratic primary race and how they have primaries and caucuses. Well, I went to the caucus a month ago, and became a delegate for my precinct (the good old 2239! :P) because they needed 16 people and there were barely that many people there.
So now we're all sitting in this basketball stadium, and I am currently surrounded by rival factions chanting rival slogans ("HIL-LA-RY" vs "YES-WE-CAN" (because "O-BA-MA" doesn't scan right I guess)). It is very uncomfortable. I don't really have the heart of a partisan, even if it's a stadium full of Democrats chanting "De-mo-crats" or "Down-with-Bush" or whatever. Partly it's my tendency to play Devil's advocate, and partly it's my huge mistrust of mobs chanting anything. :) I am here on behalf of Obama and the Democrats, but that's a choice based on logic, not extreme passion. A glance at the GOP these days shows the danger of being too passionate about any one person or group: it blows my mind how strongly the Republicans in Congress stick with Bush and each other, no matter how unpopular he gets.
It's good to have these passionate people here to do the hard work, no doubt; I'm just not suited for it myself. Oh well, it's good to do this once.
Being at a convention also means listening to political speeches with lots of "applause lines", which are annoying.
Am I a terrible person because I have The Bobs on my headphones and I'm typing on my laptop, instead of listening. I'm here for one thing, the voting, and I don't feel too bad about ignoring the rest.
